People ask me: Are you from North Korea?

If there is a logo for North Korea, it is the (smiling, hideously) face of Kim Jung Un. A highly visible and easily recognisable trademark, worldwide. In the month of July (and August and September 2017), it has been positioned on the top of almost every newspaper, almost everyday, with a variety of different captions, selling the threats of war, imminent war, World War III and, unthinkable Nuclear War. People analyse the logo from different perspectives under different scenarios, potentially catastrophic or potentially deadly or realistically inconceivable. People are getting sick of this, I am sure they are. However, it is a totally mystery to all of us because the image alone would make us believe that we know so much about potential danger and so much about North Korea and so much about the people of North Korea yet we know nothing about the matters concerned. We just recognise the image of the knowledge.

People ask me, all the time, what I think of North Korea. Some people might say, instead of asking a question, “It’s bad over there, isn’t it?”, assuming what I know is what they know. “Pretty bad, I suppose.”, I answer with a heavy sigh.

On the other hand, there is no recognisable trademark or brand for South Korea. Only the shape shifting presidents with a limited number of surnames, which include Kim, Park, Lee and recently Moon.
